Featured in Harper Lee’s 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch practices law in Maycomb County, Alabama.

Father of Jem and Scout Finch, Atticus famously defended Mr. Tom Robinson, despite the disapproval of the rest of the town.

When asked for the reason why he defended Mr. Robinson, Atticus said:

The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature […] Simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.
